Description: WELCOME TO CAMP HILLSIDE If there's a question most frequently asked of independent schools regarding their summer programs, it's this: "Is it academic, recreational or a combination of the two?" Our answer is a resounding yes! Welcome to Camp Hillside, the summer program of Hillside School that allows you to create your own summer! Each weekday includes 4 90-minute periods that you schedule from our collection of program offerings. All program offerings are 1 period each, unless otherwise specified. PROGRAM OFFERINGS
English Language Arts Designed for traditional learners, as well as those with learning differences, and individualized to the needs of each student, our courses in beginning and intermediate English develop reading, writing and study skills, while our course in advanced English explores various genres of creative writing. All assignments are completed in-class (i.e. no homework). Five campers per group.
ESL | English as a Second Language Designed for our international students, our ESL (English as a Second Language) courses focus on the major strands of the English language, i.e. reading, writing, structured grammar, listening, speaking and vocabulary. Time is also spent learning about American environment and culture. All assignments are completed in-class (i.e. no homework). Five campers per group.
Mathematics Also designed for traditional learners, as well as those with learning differences, and individualized to the needs of each student, our courses in arithmetic, pre-algebra, algebra and geometry develop problem-solving skills, while reviewing or previewing applicable topics. Topics change from session to session, and all assignments are completed in-class (i.e. no homework). Five campers per group.
Computer Science (Grades 7+) | 2 Periods For our older campers who are gifted in mathematics and logic, our beginning and intermediate levels focus on the fundamentals of computer programming using C++, an industry standard language, while our advanced levels explore game programming, using OpenGL, a graphics library. This program includes both instruction and laboratory work. Five campers per group.
Studio Art (Grades 7+) | 2 Periods Also for our older campers, but for those who are gifted in art and creativity, our beginning and intermediate levels focus on the fundamentals of drawing (with pencil, charcoal and chalk), oil painting and woodworking, while our advanced levels explore the same media in an independent format. This program includes both instruction and studio work. Ten campers per group.
Outdoor Adventure | 2 Periods For our campers who are fascinated by the great outdoors, our beginning and intermediate levels focus on building self-confidence, whether on the ropes course, the climbing wall or the trails of our wooded campus, while our advanced levels explore outdoor leadership. This program also includes a sampling of Hillside School's hands-on farm program. Ten campers per group.
Field, Gym & Pool Games Whether on the field, in the gym or at the pool, our traditional camp activities are chosen based upon camper interest. In addition to organized games of basketball, kickball, volleyball, soccer (regulation and big ball) and more, we also offer swimming in our lifeguarded outdoor pool and of course at least one weekly game of Capture the Flag, Camp Hillside style. Ten campers per group.
LAN Gaming Party In the LAN gaming lab, our camp activities are a little less traditional. A LAN is a cluster of networked computers, used in this instance for the hottest computer gaming tournaments anywhere, featuring only the coolest games. Please note that games with an E.S.R.B. rating of Mature (M) or Adults Only (AO) are strictly prohibited at Camp Hillside. Ten campers per group.
Soccer | Full-day Program For our campers who enjoy soccer, our beginning, intermediate and advanced levels focus on technical and tactical fundamentals through demonstrations, practices and games. The concepts of teamwork and sportsmanship are also strongly emphasized. This is a full-day program that includes a time for relaxation (soccer video, movie or swimming). Ten campers per group.
Counselors-in-Training (Grade 10) | 2 Periods For our oldest campers who desire to be counselors, our counselors-in-training program focuses on leadership training through workshops and practicums. Each CIT receives a small stipend and is required to attend all sessions, plus all pre-camp CIT workshops. This program allows application to the positions of jr. counselor and counselor for the following two seasons, respectively. EVENING & WEEKEND ACTIVITIES Boarding campers enjoy a wide variety of supervised activities each evening and weekend. In addition to on-campus field, gym and pool games and LAN gaming parties, the camp also arranges off-campus trips throughout New England to sporting events, amusement and water parks, live theater, museums and historic sites in Boston. Campers can also go to ice- and roller-skating rinks, a bowling alley, movie theater and mall all within a few miles of the camp. Ending each weekend is a time for reorganization and laundry. |
